Ever watch the movie Babe? Border Collies moving sheep around green pastures and penning them so smoothly.
Herding looks so easy with the pros running their well trained dogs. When you take your novice dog out to the stock, you then understand the vast amount of time and training that is needed in herding!!! Training for each dog is different, as dogs have different levels of instinct, different sense of "pressure" in relation to the stock, and the handler can work different types of stock.
