At Out Run Canines, we do not always have puppies or dogs available for sale. We breed to improve the breed, and to produce our next generations of Border Collies for the shows and trials.
This starts with pedigrees and knowing the dogs behind the stock we are breeding. All breeders have their favorite lines and types, and we look toward those to stamp their good traits on the next line of pups...always looking for more...better...always improving from the last generation. We show and trial our dogs in many areas, so we know what is in their heads as well as what they look like on the outside.
Health testing goes hand in hand with selection of the mating pair. We are very lucky to have so many DNA tests for screenings, as well as the standards of OFA and CHIC. AKC has granted us a title of BRONZE BREEDER OF MERIT and Good Dog has awarded us the rating Excellent...which means we do the health testing before breeding the AKC breed clubs mandate as needed to help breed better dogs. We do more than what is required, and we are very proud of the fact. Out Run has the most CHIC titled Border Collies on record to date 12/2020, over 26. We have also produced many highly titled dogs from our breeding program.
Once we have a great cross, and the timing is right...we do the breeding. Mother Nature is fully in charge of this...as there is not any way to bring a female in season at a certain time for breeding. Most females only are able to breed every 6-18months....so we wait...and wait...and wait....
After breeding, we wait some more. Dogs do not have a reliable pregnancy test available, and some will keep you guessing to the last few days. Care has to be taken with the mother, testing to see if she is in fact carrying, changes to diet, exercise, medications/supplements and avoiding outside stressors.
Once the babies are ready to be born....the mother is restless and requires emotional support and monitoring, to be certain she is able to handle the birth and care for each pup as it arrives. Endless problems can arise risking the life of the pup or the mother. Early detection and action can mean the difference of life and death. We never leave a whelping dam, some need moral support, some want to be left alone (but still need a careful eye), some need you to show them the way to do the job. Medical intervention need can arise in minutes. We have a wonderful vet clinic on call 24/7 which we wholly trust our dogs' health and wellbeing.
